Published in CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report in advance of National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (Oct. 15), the report underscores the serious health threat HIV continues to pose for many Latinos, who bear a disproportionate share of the HIV burden in the United States.
Key findings:- The rate of HIV diagnoses declined among Latinos overall, from 28.3 per 100,000 population to 24.3 per population, between 2008-2013
- The number of diagnoses increased 16 percent among Latino MSM, from 6,141 to 7,098, during the same time period
- Latinos are disproportionately affected by HIV infection – in 2013, the rate of HIV diagnosis among Latinos (18.7) was nearly 3 times that of whites (6.6)
